Saraca asoca (commonly known as Asoka) is a traditional Ayurvedic herb widely used in India for various gynecological conditions, including those resembling modern definitions of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) Type S, which is characterized by symptoms such as swelling, bloating, and fluid retention. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Asoka as a remedy for menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, and other menstrual disorders, often attributing to it properties of balancing hormones and alleviating menstrual discomfort. Its bark is especially used in formulations such as Ashokarishta, a popular Ayurvedic preparation for female reproductive health.

While there is substantial traditional use for symptoms that overlap with PMS Type S, modern scientific validation is limited. Only a few preclinical and small-scale clinical studies have evaluated Asoka’s effects on menstrual or premenstrual symptoms, and these often focus on general menstrual regulation rather than specific PMS subtypes. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and mild estrogenic properties, potentially justifying its historical use. However, robust randomized clinical trials targeting PMS Type S specifically are lacking. Therefore, while Asoka is traditionally used for menstrual symptoms that may include those of PMS Type S, scientific evidence for its efficacy in this specific context is preliminary and limited.
