Evidence supporting the use of: Labisia pumila
For the health condition: PMS Type P
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Labisia pumila, commonly known as "Kacip Fatimah," has a long-standing use in traditional Malay medicine, particularly for women’s reproductive health. Its use to support or treat symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), especially PMS Type P (characterized by symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, and mood swings linked to estrogen dominance), is based primarily on this traditional context. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that Malay women have used Labisia pumila as a herbal remedy to regulate menstrual cycles, relieve menstrual discomfort, and improve general female vitality. However, the scientific evidence specifically validating its efficacy for PMS Type P remains limited. Preliminary phytochemical analyses reveal that Labisia pumila contains phytoestrogens, saponins, and antioxidants, which could theoretically influence hormonal balance. Some animal and small-scale human studies suggest it may have estrogenic or adaptogenic effects, but these trials do not directly address PMS Type P or provide robust clinical evidence. Therefore, current support for its use in PMS Type P is stronger in tradition than in science, and clinical trials specifically targeting PMS symptoms are needed to fully substantiate its efficacy.
