Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Chastetree
For the health condition: PMS Type P
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo) is related to the more widely studied Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus), which has been used in both traditional and modern contexts for addressing premenstrual syndrome (PMS), particularly the PMS type characterized by pain and physical symptoms (PMS Type P). There is scientific evidence—though mainly from studies on Vitex agnus-castus—to support the use of Chaste Tree extracts for relieving symptoms such as breast pain, menstrual cramps, and other cyclical discomforts associated with PMS. The mechanism is thought to involve modulation of prolactin levels via dopaminergic effects, which can reduce symptoms like mastalgia and possibly influence other PMS symptoms.
However, direct scientific studies on Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo) for PMS are limited. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine have used Vitex negundo for gynecological complaints. Nonetheless, clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for PMS Type P in humans are lacking. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use for this indication is mostly extrapolated from related species and preclinical data, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
