Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitex, also known as Vitex agnus-castus or chaste tree, is traditionally used in herbal medicine to manage various menstrual disorders, including symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS Type D is characterized primarily by depressive symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, fatigue, and tearfulness, believed to be associated with altered neurotransmitter levels and possibly low estrogen or high progesterone states. Historically, Vitex has been used to support female hormonal balance, as it is thought to influence the pituitary gland and modulate the secretion of prolactin and possibly other reproductive hormones. The traditional use is largely based on empirical observation and centuries of herbal practice rather than on a robust, mechanistic understanding.
While there is some scientific evidence supporting Vitex’s efficacy for general PMS symptoms (such as breast tenderness, irritability, and headache), most clinical trials do not specifically differentiate between PMS subtypes like Type D. Some studies have shown modest improvements in mood-related PMS symptoms, but the evidence is mixed and often methodologically limited (e.g., small sample sizes, lack of subtype analysis). Thus, while Vitex is a traditional remedy for PMS and may have some benefits for mood symptoms, its specific use for PMS Type D is primarily justified by tradition and only weakly supported by scientific studies to date.
