Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Chastetree
For the health condition: PMS Type D
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo) and its European relative (Vitex agnus-castus, commonly called Chaste Tree or Vitex) have both been used in traditional medicine for gynecological disorders, including symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The majority of scientific studies focus on Vitex agnus-castus; however, Vitex negundo contains similar phytochemicals, such as flavonoids and iridoid glycosides, and is used in some Asian systems of medicine for similar indications.
PMS Type D is characterized by depressive symptoms, including mood swings, irritability, and low mood. The mechanism by which Vitex species are thought to help is through modulation of dopaminergic activity and indirect effects on prolactin levels, which may influence mood and other PMS symptoms. Studies on Vitex agnus-castus have shown statistically significant improvements in PMS symptoms, including affective symptoms, likely related to prolactin modulation and possible effects on neurotransmitter balance.
Direct scientific evidence specific to Vitex negundo (Chinese Chastetree) for PMS, and particularly PMS Type D, is limited; the rating of 3 reflects supportive but indirect evidence, largely extrapolated from studies on Vitex agnus-castus and some traditional use. Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some clinical precedent for the use of Chastetree in PMS, the evidence base for Chinese Chastetree in PMS Type D specifically is moderate and primarily inferential.
