Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Western Mugwort (Artemisia ludoviciana) has a history of traditional use among Indigenous peoples of North America and in folk herbalism, where it has been employed for a variety of women's health concerns, including menstrual complaints. "PMS Type C" refers to premenstrual syndrome characterized mainly by cravings and symptoms associated with blood sugar fluctuations, such as headaches, fatigue, and increased appetite. While some Artemisia species (such as Artemisia vulgaris, or common mugwort) have been used in European and Asian traditional medicine for menstrual regulation and relief of menstrual discomfort, the evidence for Artemisia ludoviciana specifically is less robust and mostly anecdotal. There are no high-quality clinical studies or substantial pharmacological research directly supporting the use of Western Mugwort for PMS Type C or for managing cravings and metabolic symptoms associated with PMS. Traditional herbal texts and ethnobotanical surveys occasionally mention its use for general gynecological complaints, but specifics about PMS subtypes are lacking. Therefore, the use of Western Mugwort for PMS Type C is primarily based on tradition and not on scientific validation. More research would be needed to establish efficacy and safety for this particular indication.
