Vitex, also known as Vitex agnus-castus or chaste tree, has a long history of traditional use for various menstrual disorders, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS has been categorized into different subtypes; PMS Type C is characterized primarily by symptoms of carbohydrate craving, increased appetite, and sometimes headaches or fatigue, often linked to fluctuations in blood sugar and insulin sensitivity. Traditional herbal medicine, especially in European phytotherapy, has used Vitex to help regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate general PMS symptoms, based largely on its dopaminergic activity that may influence prolactin secretion and support hormonal balance.
However, while there is moderate evidence from clinical trials supporting Vitex's efficacy in reducing general PMS symptoms—such as irritability, mood swings, breast tenderness, and bloating—there is little to no direct scientific evidence specifically supporting its use for PMS Type C symptoms (e.g., cravings and hypoglycemia). Most studies group all PMS symptoms together without distinguishing among subtypes like Type C. Thus, the use of Vitex for PMS Type C is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation specific to this subtype, and the overall evidence strength for this particular use is limited.
