Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Labisia pumila, also known as Kacip Fatimah, is a traditional herb widely used in Malaysia and neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Its use for women’s reproductive health, including menstrual irregularities and symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), is rooted in traditional medicine rather than robust scientific evidence. PMS Type C refers specifically to symptoms such as carbohydrate craving, increased appetite, and fatigue. Traditional practitioners believe that Labisia pumila helps regulate hormonal balance and improves overall reproductive health, which may indirectly alleviate some PMS symptoms.

However, the scientific literature on the efficacy of Labisia pumila for PMS—especially Type C—is limited. Most available studies focus on its phytoestrogenic properties, potential antioxidative effects, and its role in postpartum recovery, menopause, and general menstrual health. There is a lack of direct clinical trials investigating its specific benefits for PMS Type C symptoms. Some preclinical and small-scale human studies suggest hormone-modulating and anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to PMS Type C. As such, the use of Labisia pumila for this condition is primarily justified by traditional practices, with only modest support from scientific research to date.
