Evidence supporting the use of: Pulsatilla
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pulsatilla, commonly known as pasque flower, has a long-standing history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including homeopathy, for addressing various women's health concerns such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In particular, homeopathic practitioners often recommend Pulsatilla for emotional symptoms associated with PMS, such as mood swings, weepiness, and irritability, especially when symptoms are changeable and associated with mildness or a desire for company. Documentation of its use dates back to traditional European herbalism and was incorporated into homeopathic practice in the 19th century, largely based on the "like cures like" principle and reports of symptom improvement in individual cases.
However, there is a lack of high-quality scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Pulsatilla for PMS. No large, well-designed clinical trials have confirmed its benefits for PMS symptoms, and available studies are either anecdotal or methodologically weak. Most references to Pulsatilla for PMS are found in homeopathic materia medica and traditional herbal literature rather than in peer-reviewed scientific studies. Therefore, its use for PMS is justified by tradition rather than scientific validation, and the overall quality of evidence is low.
