Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is primarily used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia, for a variety of health concerns, including support for symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, different parts of the lotus plant—such as seeds, leaves, and stamens—are believed to have calming, anti-inflammatory, and mood-stabilizing properties. These traditional systems sometimes recommend lotus-based preparations to alleviate menstrual discomfort, irritability, or mild mood disturbances that can accompany PMS. However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence supporting the use of lotus specifically for PMS symptoms. Most of the available research focuses on the general anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and sedative effects of lotus extracts in animal or in vitro studies, rather than clinical trials in humans with PMS. Thus, while the historical and traditional use is documented, high-quality evidence from modern clinical research is lacking. As a result, the justification for using lotus for PMS is primarily rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation.
