Evidence supporting the use of: Liquid liver fractions
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Liquid liver fractions, typically derived from beef or other animal livers, have a long-standing history in traditional and naturopathic medicine as a general tonic for health, particularly for supporting blood health and vitality. The reasoning behind its use for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is primarily based on the liver's rich content of nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12, folate, and other B vitamins, which are believed to help with symptoms like fatigue, anemia, and mood disturbances sometimes associated with PMS. Historically, some practitioners have suggested that since the liver plays a role in hormone metabolism, consuming liver extracts could indirectly support hormonal balance, although this is more speculative than evidence-based. However, there is no robust scientific literature or clinical trials specifically supporting the use of liquid liver fractions for PMS symptom relief. Most of the rationale comes from the general benefit of correcting nutritional deficiencies rather than directly addressing PMS mechanisms. While iron and B vitamin supplementation may be helpful in cases where deficiency is present, using whole liver fractions specifically for PMS is not well validated by modern research. Overall, the use of liquid liver fractions for PMS is mainly supported by tradition and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific evidence.
