For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cnidium (Cnidium monnieri) is a traditional herb used in Chinese medicine, primarily for reproductive health issues, skin conditions, and as an aphrodisiac. Its use for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is based largely on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Cnidium is believed to invigorate blood and dispel wind and dampness, which are thought to contribute to various gynecological symptoms. Some TCM formulations that include Cnidium are used to address menstrual irregularities and discomfort, which may overlap with PMS symptoms such as cramps and mood changes. However, direct historical references to its use specifically for PMS are limited, as the Western concept of PMS does not have a direct equivalent in traditional Chinese medical texts. Scientific studies on Cnidium for PMS are lacking, and no clinical trials have directly evaluated its efficacy for this condition. Most available research focuses on its effects on sexual health and skin disorders. Therefore, while Cnidium’s inclusion in some traditional formulations for women’s health provides a historical rationale for its use, scientific support for its effectiveness in treating PMS is minimal.
