Evidence supporting the use of: Citrus reticulata
For the health condition: PMS (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Citrus reticulata, commonly known as tangerine or mandarin orange, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where its dried peel (Chen Pi) is used to regulate qi (energy), improve digestion, and address various symptoms such as bloating and discomfort. In the context of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), TCM practitioners may recommend formulations containing Citrus reticulata peel to alleviate symptoms like abdominal distention, bloating, and mood disturbances, which are interpreted within TCM as manifestations of "qi stagnation." However, there is little to no direct scientific research substantiating the use of Citrus reticulata specifically for PMS. Most available studies focus on its general digestive or anti-inflammatory effects rather than on menstrual or hormonal symptoms. Therefore, while its use for PMS is justified mainly by traditional practice and anecdotal evidence, and it is included in some traditional herbal formulas aimed at women's health, scientific validation of its efficacy for PMS is lacking. The evidence rating is low due to the absence of rigorous clinical trials or targeted pharmacological research for this specific indication.
