Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bovine pituitary extracts have been used in traditional and alternative medicine, particularly in glandular therapy, with the belief that "like supports like"—the idea that consuming animal organ tissues can support the corresponding organ in humans. This practice, which gained popularity in the early to mid-20th century, was particularly promoted by practitioners such as Dr. Royal Lee. The rationale behind using bovine pituitary to support the anterior pituitary system is based on the assumption that it contains hormones, peptides, or nutrients that could help nourish or stimulate the human pituitary gland.

However, scientific validation for this practice is minimal. Modern research has not demonstrated that orally ingested bovine pituitary extract is effective in supporting or modulating human pituitary function. The digestive process breaks down most proteins and peptides, making it unlikely that bioactive pituitary hormones survive to exert any systemic effect. Furthermore, there are safety concerns regarding the use of animal glandulars, including the risk of transmitting infectious agents.

Thus, while there is a historical tradition for the use of bovine pituitary in supporting the anterior pituitary body system, there is little scientific evidence to substantiate its efficacy. The evidence rating is therefore low, reflecting the lack of robust studies or clinical trials validating its use for this purpose.
