Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Premna, particularly Premna serratifolia, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and various Southeast Asian ethnomedical practices. In these traditions, Premna leaves and roots are often used for their purported anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound-healing properties. Phlebitis—characterized by inflammation of the veins—has been addressed in folk medicine by topical or internal use of Premna preparations, with the aim of reducing swelling and pain. Descriptions in Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys indicate its application in conditions involving inflammation, though not always specified as “phlebitis” in modern clinical terms.

However, scientific studies directly investigating Premna’s efficacy in treating phlebitis are lacking. While some preclinical research has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of Premna extracts, these studies are mostly in vitro or use animal models unrelated to venous inflammation. No clinical trials or robust experimental data specifically validate its use for phlebitis in humans. Therefore, its use for this condition is justified more by tradition than by scientific validation, and the overall evidence supporting its effectiveness in phlebitis is weak and indirect.
