Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese Mallow (Malva verticillata) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Dong Kui Zi." In TCM, Chinese Mallow seeds and leaves are used to promote urination, clear heat, and alleviate swelling, which may indirectly relate to conditions involving inflammation, such as phlebitis (inflammation of veins). However, while traditional texts sometimes reference its use for reducing swelling and “heat toxin,” direct references to the treatment of phlebitis specifically are limited. Its inclusion in traditional formulations for inflammatory or edematous disorders has led to its occasional use for vein inflammation, but such applications are extrapolated rather than explicitly documented.

From a scientific perspective, there is minimal direct evidence supporting the use of Chinese Mallow for phlebitis. Some laboratory studies have indicated that Malva species possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but these findings are general and not specific to vascular inflammation or phlebitis. No clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have established efficacy in this context. Therefore, the primary justification for its use comes from tradition, and the level of supporting evidence is low, reflecting anecdotal or historical rather than evidence-based practice.
