Evidence supporting the use of: Centipeda minima
For the health condition: Phlebitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Centipeda minima, known as "Eclipta prostrata" in some contexts, is a herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine for a variety of ailments, including skin conditions, nasal disorders, and inflammatory problems. Its use in the context of phlebitis—an inflammation of the veins—appears to be grounded primarily in traditional medicine, particularly within herbal formulations aimed at reducing swelling and inflammation. Historical Chinese medical texts sometimes reference Centipeda minima as an ingredient in topical or oral remedies designed to "clear heat" and "dispel toxins," terms that are associated with inflammatory processes in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory. However, while there are a few animal and in vitro studies suggesting anti-inflammatory properties of extracts from this plant, there is no direct clinical or robust preclinical evidence specifically supporting its efficacy in treating phlebitis in humans. The evidence for its use in this context is therefore rated low. Most references are based on empirical and anecdotal use rather than systematic scientific validation. As a result, while Centipeda minima continues to be included in some traditional herbal prescriptions for inflammatory conditions, its use for phlebitis is justified by tradition rather than by strong scientific evidence.
