Evidence supporting the use of: Canadian Goldenrod
For the health condition: Phlebitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Indigenous peoples of North America and later in European herbal traditions. Its primary traditional applications have been for urinary tract conditions, as a diuretic, and for wound healing due to its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In some European herbal texts and folk practices, goldenrod has also been used for supporting the circulatory system and managing mild inflammatory conditions, including phlebitis (inflammation of veins). However, scientific validation for its effectiveness in treating phlebitis specifically is lacking. While the plant contains flavonoids, saponins, and other bioactive compounds with demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory and animal studies, there are no controlled clinical trials or robust scientific studies that directly assess its efficacy in phlebitis or related venous inflammation in humans. Therefore, its use for this purpose remains grounded in tradition and anecdotal reports rather than strong scientific evidence.
