Evidence supporting the use of: Banyan
For the health condition: Phlebitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda for various inflammatory conditions, including those resembling phlebitis (inflammation of veins). In Ayurvedic texts, the bark, latex, and aerial roots of the banyan tree are described as possessing anti-inflammatory, astringent, and wound-healing properties. Traditional healers have used preparations from banyan to treat swelling, ulcers, and local inflammations, which may include conditions similar to phlebitis.
However, there is a paucity of direct scientific research specifically validating the use of banyan for phlebitis. While some phytochemical studies indicate that extracts of Ficus benghalensis have anti-inflammatory activity in animal models, these studies are not directly connected to phlebitis or vein inflammation in humans. The use of banyan in this context is therefore primarily supported by historical and traditional practice rather than rigorous clinical research. There is a need for more targeted scientific studies to definitively assess its efficacy and safety for phlebitis.
