Evidence supporting the use of: Lion's mane
For the health condition: Pets (supplements for)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom that has gained popularity in recent years as a supplement for pets, primarily dogs and cats. The primary rationale for its use is based on its potential neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating properties. Scientific research in laboratory animals and in vitro studies has shown that lion's mane contains compounds—such as hericenones and erinacines—that may stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis and promote neural regeneration. In rodent models, lion's mane has demonstrated benefits for cognitive function and may ameliorate symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. In veterinary practice, extrapolation from these studies has led to the use of lion's mane extracts to support cognitive health and possibly help with age-related cognitive decline in pets.
However, direct scientific evidence in companion animals is limited. There are few, if any, well-controlled clinical trials evaluating lion's mane supplementation in dogs or cats. Most claims are supported by mechanistic studies in rodents or in vitro, rather than robust clinical data in pets. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preclinical data suggesting potential benefits, the strength of evidence for its use in pets remains modest (rated 2 out of 5). Lion's mane is generally considered safe for animals when used appropriately, but pet owners should consult a veterinarian before starting supplementation.
