Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B12 (unspecified)
For the health condition: Pernicious Anemia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5
Vitamin B12 is scientifically validated for the treatment and support of Pernicious Anemia. Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune condition that impairs the absorption of vitamin B12 by destroying gastric parietal cells responsible for producing intrinsic factor, a protein essential for B12 absorption in the small intestine. As a result, patients develop vitamin B12 deficiency, which leads to impaired DNA synthesis and the production of abnormally large red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia).
The use of vitamin B12 to treat pernicious anemia is based on well-established medical evidence. Since the 1920s, when the relationship between B12 deficiency and pernicious anemia was first discovered, parenteral (intramuscular) administration of vitamin B12 has been the standard of care. Oral supplementation is also effective at sufficiently high doses. Clinical trials and decades of clinical practice have demonstrated that vitamin B12 supplementation effectively corrects the anemia, reverses neurological symptoms (if not too advanced), and prevents complications.
Major medical guidelines, including those from the American Society of Hematology and the British Society for Haematology, recommend vitamin B12 as the definitive therapy for pernicious anemia. The evidence base for this use is extensive and includes randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and systematic reviews. The effect size is large and the therapy is essential, making the evidence rating a 5 on the scale provided above.
