Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 5

Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is scientifically validated as a treatment for pernicious anemia. Pernicious anemia is caused by impaired absorption of vitamin B12 due to a lack of intrinsic factor, a protein necessary for B12 uptake in the gut. The link between B12 deficiency and pernicious anemia was first established in the early 20th century. Before the discovery of vitamin B12, pernicious anemia was fatal; however, after B12’s identification and isolation, it became clear that supplementation could correct the underlying deficiency and restore normal red blood cell production.

Multiple clinical studies and decades of medical experience have shown that intramuscular or high-dose oral supplementation with vitamin B12 reverses the hematologic and neurologic manifestations of the disease. Large reviews and clinical guidelines (such as those from the British Society for Haematology and the American Society of Hematology) recommend B12 as the first-line, definitive treatment for pernicious anemia. Cyanocobalamin is one of the most commonly used forms of B12 for this purpose, although other forms (such as hydroxocobalamin) are also effective.

Therefore, B12 therapy for pernicious anemia is supported by robust, longstanding scientific evidence, and is the universally accepted standard of care for this condition.
