Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tanshinone, a key bioactive compound extracted from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and treating cardiovascular conditions. Its use for peripheral neuropathy is grounded mainly in TCM theory, where it is believed that improving microcirculation can help alleviate neuropathic symptoms. Some traditional formulas containing Danshen have been prescribed for symptoms resembling peripheral neuropathy, such as numbness and tingling, particularly in the context of diabetic complications.

There is limited clinical research investigating Tanshinone specifically for peripheral neuropathy. A small number of preclinical studies suggest that Tanshinone IIA may have neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, and some animal models indicate potential in reducing nerve damage or improving nerve function. However, these studies are preliminary, and high-quality randomized controlled trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while Tanshinone is traditionally used for general circulatory and neurological complaints, robust scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating peripheral neuropathy is insufficient. Its use for this indication remains supported more by traditional practice than by modern clinical validation.
