Evidence supporting the use of: 7,8-Dihydroxyflavone
For the body system: Parasympathetic Nervous System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
7,8-Dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) is a naturally occurring flavonoid that acts as a potent and selective agonist of the TrkB receptor, the main receptor for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Scientific interest in 7,8-DHF has focused largely on its neuroprotective effects in the central nervous system, with the majority of research conducted in animal models. There is limited direct evidence specifically linking 7,8-DHF to the support or enhancement of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Some animal studies suggest that 7,8-DHF may improve cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and counteract neuronal damage, effects that could theoretically influence autonomic balance, including the PNS. However, these effects are mostly attributed to its influence on BDNF/TrkB signaling, which plays a broad role in neuronal health rather than in targeted modulation of parasympathetic activity.
To date, there are no clinical trials specifically demonstrating that 7,8-DHF supports or enhances PNS function in humans. The evidence base is therefore preliminary and indirect, consisting mostly of basic neuroscience and animal research. This ingredient is not traditionally used for this purpose; its use is based on modern scientific exploration rather than historical or herbal medicine practices. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale based on mechanisms, the direct evidence for supporting the parasympathetic nervous system is weak, meriting a modest evidence rating.
