Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Desmodium species, particularly Desmodium gangeticum and Desmodium triflorum, have a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and various African ethnomedicines for the management of parasitic infections, including those caused by nematodes and worms. Documented uses include decoctions or infusions of the roots, leaves, or whole plants as vermifuges—agents intended to expel intestinal worms. For example, in Indian traditional practice, Desmodium is listed among remedies for intestinal parasites, and its use is also reported in some West African ethnobotanical surveys for deworming purposes.

However, the scientific validation for this use remains limited. Some in vitro studies have shown that extracts from certain Desmodium species exhibit activity against helminthic larvae or adult worms, but these results are preliminary and mostly restricted to laboratory settings. No robust clinical trials in humans have been published to confirm efficacy or safety for antiparasitic purposes. Thus, the evidence supporting Desmodium’s use for treating nematodes or worms is primarily traditional, with only modest and indirect support from early-stage scientific studies. The overall quality and quantity of supporting evidence is weak, and use for this purpose should be considered with caution until more rigorous research is available.
