Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia corymbosa and Oldenlandia diffusa, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and various folk medicine practices across Asia. It has been used traditionally for a variety of ailments, including fevers, infections, and as an adjunct in treating parasitic diseases. In some traditional systems, Oldenlandia preparations are believed to possess antiparasitic and antihelmintic properties, and decoctions or extracts have been used to help expel intestinal worms and treat other parasitic infections. However, the scientific validation for Oldenlandia's antiparasitic effects is limited. While there are some preclinical studies indicating that extracts from Oldenlandia species possess antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity in vitro, these studies are sparse, often preliminary, and most focus on broader antimicrobial properties rather than specific activity against clinically relevant parasites. No robust human clinical trials or systematic reviews definitively establish its efficacy for treating parasitic infections. Thus, the use of Oldenlandia for this purpose is primarily rooted in traditional practice, with modest supporting evidence from laboratory research but lacking strong clinical validation.
