Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Blepharis, a genus of plants in the Acanthaceae family, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems across Africa and Asia. Several species, particularly Blepharis edulis and Blepharis maderaspatensis, have been traditionally employed for their purported antiparasitic and anthelmintic (anti-worm) properties. Ethnobotanical surveys and compilations of traditional medicinal knowledge, such as those from India and Africa, document its use in treating intestinal worms and other parasitic infections. However, direct scientific studies evaluating antiparasitic efficacy are sparse. A few in vitro and animal studies have assessed extracts from Blepharis species for antimicrobial and aniprotozoal activities, with some indicating modest effects, but robust evidence specific to common human parasites is lacking. Most of the current support derives from historical usage and traditional practitioners’ reports rather than well-controlled clinical trials. Therefore, while there is a basis in traditional medicine for the use of Blepharis against parasites, scientific validation remains limited, and the overall strength of evidence is low.
