Evidence supporting the use of: Baliospermum
For the health condition: Parasites (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Baliospermum montanum is traditionally used in various systems of Indian medicine, such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani, for the treatment of intestinal parasites and as a purgative. The plant's roots, in particular, are described in classical Ayurvedic texts as "krimighna" (anthelmintic), and decoctions or powders of the root are prescribed to expel intestinal worms. Ethnobotanical surveys across India have documented the use of Baliospermum by tribal and rural communities as a remedy for worm infestations and other parasitic infections. However, while its traditional use is well recorded, scientific validation is limited. Some preliminary pharmacological studies have reported that extracts of Baliospermum montanum possess anthelmintic activity in vitro and in animal models, but the evidence is not conclusive or robust. No large-scale clinical trials have been conducted to confirm its efficacy or safety for parasitic infections in humans. Thus, the primary support for using Baliospermum against parasites is based on longstanding traditional knowledge rather than strong scientific evidence.
