Vitamin D is crucial for calcium homeostasis and bone health, and deficiency can lead to conditions such as osteomalacia in adults or rickets in children, which may cause muscle weakness and, in severe cases, difficulty with movement or even paralysis-like symptoms. There is also emerging evidence that vitamin D may play a role in nerve health and function, as vitamin D receptors are present in the brain and spinal cord, and vitamin D may modulate inflammatory responses and neuroprotection.

However, the direct use of vitamin D as a treatment for established paralysis (such as from spinal cord injury, stroke, or other central nervous system damage) is not strongly supported by high-quality clinical trials.
