Porcine pancreatic extract is scientifically justified for supporting pancreatic function, particularly in individuals with pancreatic insufficiency. The tail of the pancreas, like the rest of the organ, contains the islets of Langerhans and exocrine tissue. Porcine pancreatic enzymes (including lipase, amylase, and protease) are derived from the whole gland, not just the tail, but they are used therapeutically as pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) in conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and after pancreatectomy. Numerous clinical studies and systematic reviews have demonstrated the efficacy of porcine pancreatic enzymes in improving nutrient absorption and reducing gastrointestinal symptoms in these patients (see: Whitcomb DC, "Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy: Indications and Use," UpToDate, 2023; Sikkens et al., "Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy in chronic pancreatitis," Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology, 2010). There is no evidence that extracts from only the tail of the pancreas have unique effects; rather, the whole organ extract is used. Porcine pancreatic extracts are standardized and regulated for medical use, with well-documented benefits in pancreatic insufficiency. However, for the general healthy population, there is little evidence to support its use for "supporting" the pancreas, as opposed to treating diagnosed insufficiency. In summary, porcine pancreatic extract is a scientifically validated therapy for specific pancreatic disorders, supporting its use in clinical settings.
