Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Lipase is an enzyme primarily produced by the pancreas, playing a critical role in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. In clinical practice, pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), which includes lipase, is a well-established treatment for individuals with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes. EPI is commonly associated with chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, or after pancreatic surgery. Numerous clinical trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated that oral supplementation with lipase-containing enzyme preparations significantly improves fat absorption, reduces steatorrhea (fatty stools), and helps maintain nutritional status in affected individuals.

This therapeutic use is strongly supported by scientific evidence and forms a cornerstone of standard care for EPI. However, for individuals with a healthy pancreas, there is no robust scientific evidence supporting the use of lipase supplements to "support" or "enhance" normal pancreatic function or health. The scientific validation thus pertains specifically to treating enzyme insufficiency, not to general pancreatic support in healthy populations. In summary, lipase is scientifically validated for supporting the pancreas in the context of enzyme insufficiency, with a high level of clinical evidence (rated 4/5), but not for general health maintenance in those without pancreatic dysfunction.
