Evidence supporting the use of: Helicteres isora
For the body system: Pancreas Head
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Helicteres isora, commonly known as the Indian screw tree, has been used in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine for a range of ailments, including diabetes and digestive disorders. Its association with supporting the pancreas (specifically the head and body of the pancreas, which are integral to insulin production and glucose metabolism) is primarily rooted in this traditional use. Several traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys cite the use of Helicteres isora roots, bark, and fruits as remedies to manage diabetes, which indirectly suggests pancreatic support. The primary rationale is that herbs used for "Madhumeha" (diabetes) in Ayurveda are often believed to act on the pancreas, improving its function or protecting it from damage.
Scientific studies on Helicteres isora are limited but do exist. Some animal studies have shown hypoglycemic (blood sugar-lowering) effects of extracts from the plant, and a few in vitro studies have reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, these studies rarely clarify the exact mechanism of action or definitively link the effects to direct support or regeneration of pancreatic tissue. There is not yet enough robust, clinically validated evidence in humans to confirm its efficacy for pancreatic health or diabetes management beyond traditional claims. Therefore, although there is some preliminary scientific interest, the justification for its use remains primarily traditional.
