Citrus junos, commonly known as yuzu, is a citrus fruit traditionally used in East Asian countries, particularly Japan, Korea, and China. In traditional medicine practices, such as Kampo (Japanese traditional medicine) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), various citrus fruits, including yuzu, have been used to help with digestive issues, including symptoms believed to be associated with "overacidity" or dyspepsia. The rationale is typically based on the fruit's aromatic oils and mild bitterness, which are thought to stimulate digestion and balance stomach functions. Historical texts and folk remedies sometimes recommend yuzu peel or extracts as a component of herbal formulas to ease digestive discomfort. However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence specifically investigating the effects of Citrus junos on stomach acidity or overacidity. While some studies have explored yuzu's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and gastroprotective properties, direct clinical trials for hyperacidity or acid reflux in humans are lacking. Thus, its use for "overacidity" is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence based on contemporary research is considered low. As such, while yuzu is traditionally used for digestive support, further research would be necessary to confirm its efficacy and mechanisms for treating or supporting conditions related to overacidity.
