Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amomum species, commonly known as cardamom (though “cardamom” can refer to several related genera), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, Amomum fruits and seeds are often used to address digestive complaints, including symptoms suggestive of “overacidity” (which may refer to dyspepsia, acid reflux, or gastritis in modern terms). Amomum is believed to have carminative, stomachic, and antiemetic properties, and is sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to balance stomach Qi, relieve nausea, and reduce sensations of burning or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
However, the scientific validation for Amomum's use specifically for “overacidity” is limited. Some laboratory studies have explored antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and gastroprotective effects of extracts from Amomum species, but these studies are few and often not directly focused on gastric acidity. Systematic reviews or clinical trials supporting its efficacy for hyperacidity or acid-related disorders are lacking. As such, the use of Amomum for “overacidity” is primarily justified by traditional use rather than by robust scientific evidence.
