Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Eggs are a rich source of essential nutrients, including high-quality protein, vitamins (such as B vitamins), minerals (including selenium and zinc), and healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids. From a scientific perspective, these nutrients are important for overall reproductive health, including the functioning of the ovaries. Several studies have highlighted the role of adequate nutrition—especially the intake of high-quality protein and micronutrients—in supporting ovarian function and fertility. For example, choline, found abundantly in egg yolks, is a nutrient critical for cell membrane formation and signaling, which are key for healthy egg (oocyte) development in the ovaries. Omega-3 fatty acids, also present in eggs (particularly when hens are fed an omega-3-rich diet), have been shown to support hormonal balance and may benefit women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other ovulatory disorders. While eggs themselves are not a direct treatment for ovarian conditions, their nutritional profile can contribute to optimal ovarian health as part of a balanced diet. Clinical guidelines for fertility and reproductive health often recommend the inclusion of eggs and similar nutrient-dense foods. However, more direct clinical studies are needed to specifically link egg consumption to improvements in ovarian function, so while the scientific rationale for supporting ovarian health is strong, direct evidence is still evolving.
