Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hydrolyzed beef collagen is used to support bone health, including in osteoporosis, primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than longstanding traditional use. Collagen is a key protein in bone structure, and its hydrolyzed form is more easily absorbed. Recent studies suggest that supplementation with collagen peptides may have beneficial effects on bone metabolism. A few randomized controlled trials have shown that daily supplementation with hydrolyzed collagen can increase bone mineral density (BMD) or bone formation markers in postmenopausal women, a population at increased risk for osteoporosis. For example, a 2018 study by König et al. (Nutrients, 2018) found that 5 g of collagen peptides daily for 12 months resulted in a statistically significant increase in BMD of the spine and femoral neck compared to placebo. Other in vitro and animal studies suggest collagen peptides may stimulate osteoblast activity and inhibit bone resorption.

However, the number of high-quality human clinical trials is still limited, and the effects, while promising, are modest compared to established osteoporosis treatments (like bisphosphonates or hormone therapy). Meta-analyses acknowledge potential benefits but call for more large-scale, long-term studies. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and some supporting data, the evidence base is not yet robust, justifying a moderate rating.
