Calcium is widely used to support and treat osteoporosis, and its use is primarily justified by scientific validation. Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by decreased bone mass and increased risk of fractures, often due to an imbalance in bone remodeling. Calcium is a major mineral component of bone, and adequate calcium intake is essential for the development and maintenance of strong bones throughout life.

Multiple clinical guidelines, including those from the National Osteoporosis Foundation and the Endocrine Society, recommend sufficient calcium intake (typically 1000-1200 mg/day for adults) as part of osteoporosis prevention and management. Scientific evidence shows that dietary calcium, in combination with vitamin D, can reduce bone loss and lower fracture risk, particularly in older adults and postmenopausal women. Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that calcium supplementation (especially when combined with vitamin D) helps to modestly increase bone mineral density and reduce the risk of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures.

However, the benefit of calcium alone is modest, and its use should be part of a comprehensive approach including other lifestyle and pharmacological interventions. Recent studies also caution against excessive calcium supplementation due to potential cardiovascular risks. Thus, while there is strong scientific support for adequate calcium intake in osteoporosis prevention and treatment, recommendations increasingly favor meeting calcium needs primarily through diet rather than supplements where possible.
