Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Algalin is not a standard term, but it is often used to refer to algal-derived calcium, also known as "algae calcium" or "calcium from red marine algae" (such as Lithothamnion species). Algae-based calcium supplements are used as an alternative to traditional calcium carbonate or calcium citrate in osteoporosis management. The rationale is that algae-derived calcium contains not only calcium but also trace minerals like magnesium, which may aid bone health.

Several small clinical studies and preclinical research support the bioavailability and potential bone-protective effects of algae-derived calcium. For example, a 2011 randomized controlled trial (Aslam et al., J Bone Miner Metab) found that postmenopausal women taking algae calcium experienced less bone loss compared to placebo. Additionally, in vitro and animal studies suggest that the trace minerals in algal calcium may enhance bone mineralization.

However, the overall body of evidence remains limited, with relatively few large-scale, long-term studies directly comparing algal calcium to other forms of calcium in osteoporosis prevention or treatment. Most guidelines for osteoporosis still recommend calcium and vitamin D supplementation, without specifying the source. Thus, while there is some scientific support, it is not robust enough to be considered definitive.
