Evidence supporting the use of: Lactococcus rhamnosus
For the health condition: Oral Surgery
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lactococcus rhamnosus (often referred to as Lactobacillus rhamnosus, particularly the GG strain) has been investigated for its potential benefits in oral health, including applications related to oral surgery. Several scientific studies have explored the use of probiotics, including L. rhamnosus, for the prevention and management of oral infections, reduction of postoperative complications, and support of oral mucosal healing. The proposed mechanisms include competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, modulation of local immune responses, and improvement of mucosal barrier function.
Research specifically examining L. rhamnosus in oral surgery contexts is limited but growing. A few randomized controlled trials and clinical studies have reported that the use of L. rhamnosus-containing probiotic lozenges or tablets can reduce the incidence of postoperative infections, decrease inflammation, and promote faster healing following procedures such as tooth extractions and periodontal surgeries. For example, a 2022 clinical trial found that patients receiving L. rhamnosus post-extraction had reduced postoperative pain and swelling compared to placebo. However, most studies use mixed probiotic formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to L. rhamnosus.
Overall, while there is moderate scientific support (evidence rating 3/5) for the adjunctive use of L. rhamnosus in oral surgery, especially for infection prevention and enhanced healing, larger and more targeted clinical trials are needed to establish definitive recommendations.
