Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Calendula officinalis, commonly known as marigold, has a long tradition of use in wound healing, including oral and dental applications. More recently, some scientific studies have explored its efficacy in supporting oral surgery recovery, particularly due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties attributed to compounds such as flavonoids, triterpenoids, and essential oils.

Several small-scale clinical trials and in vitro studies suggest that calendula extracts may reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and limit microbial contamination in the oral cavity. For example, some randomized controlled trials have assessed calendula mouthwashes or gels for post-extraction recovery, showing reduced pain, swelling, and faster healing compared to placebo or standard care. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes, short follow-up periods, and variable methodologies.

While calendula is widely considered safe for topical use in the mouth, mainstream clinical guidelines do not routinely recommend it due to insufficient high-quality evidence. Thus, its use is somewhat supported by preliminary scientific findings, but robust, large-scale clinical trials are lacking. Overall, calendula’s role in oral surgery recovery is promising but not yet firmly established.
