Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) has some scientific support for its use in oral surgery, primarily related to its role in promoting oral health and aiding post-surgical recovery. Several studies indicate that probiotics, including Bifidobacterium species, may help reduce the risk of postoperative infections, modulate inflammation, and support the re-establishment of a healthy oral microbiome following dental procedures. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that oral probiotic supplements can reduce the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity, decrease postoperative pain and swelling, and reduce the incidence of alveolar osteitis ("dry socket") after tooth extractions. The proposed mechanisms include competitive inhibition of pathogenic microbes, modulation of local immune responses, and enhancement of mucosal barrier function. However, most studies to date are small, short-term, and often use combinations of probiotic strains, making it difficult to isolate the effects of Bifidobacterium alone. Furthermore, the quality of evidence is limited by methodological variability and the lack of standardized protocols. While the use of Bifidobacterium in oral surgery is not yet considered standard of care, there is a growing body of evidence supporting its potential adjunctive role in improving surgical outcomes and oral health. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to establish definitive recommendations.
