Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bai Ji (Rhizoma Bletillae) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), particularly for its hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) and wound-healing properties. In the context of oral surgery, Bai Ji is traditionally applied in powdered form to bleeding wounds in the mouth, such as after tooth extraction, to help control bleeding and promote tissue repair. The traditional rationale is based on Bai Ji's astringent and cooling nature, which is believed to help 'bind' tissues and stop bleeding.

Some in vitro and animal studies have investigated Bai Ji's effects on wound healing and hemostasis, often showing promising results regarding accelerated tissue regeneration and reduced bleeding time. However, these studies are generally preliminary, and robust clinical trials in humans—especially in the context of oral surgery—are lacking. The use of Bai Ji in modern oral surgery is therefore mainly justified by its historical and traditional application rather than strong scientific evidence. Clinical guidelines in Western medicine do not currently endorse Bai Ji for oral surgery support.

In summary, Bai Ji's use in oral surgery is primarily rooted in tradition, with limited scientific evaluation. Its hemostatic action is well-regarded in TCM, but high-quality clinical data are insufficient to confirm its efficacy by modern standards.
