Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, has been investigated for its potential to help with various psychiatric conditions, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The rationale for its use is based on preclinical evidence and a small number of clinical studies suggesting that CBD may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and anti-compulsive effects, possibly through modulation of the endocannabinoid system, serotonin receptors, and neural circuits implicated in OCD.
A handful of animal studies indicate that CBD can reduce compulsive behaviors in rodent models. Human evidence, however, is very limited. A few case reports and small-scale studies (e.g., single-dose or open-label trials) have examined CBD’s effects in individuals with OCD, showing some reduction in symptoms, but these studies are not robust enough (lacking control groups, blinding, or sufficient sample sizes) to make strong conclusions.
Systematic reviews and expert consensus generally conclude that while there is preliminary evidence for CBD’s potential benefit in OCD, it remains insufficient for widespread clinical recommendation. Larger, well-controlled clinical trials are needed. Therefore, scientific validation exists at a low level, and the current evidence is best described as promising but inconclusive.
