Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Anemarrhena asphodeloides, known as Zhimu in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily used to clear heat and nourish yin. Night sweating—often attributed in TCM to “yin deficiency with heat”—is one of the classic syndromes for which Zhimu is prescribed, commonly in formulas such as Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan. The traditional rationale is that Zhimu’s cooling and moistening properties help restore yin and reduce the heat that causes spontaneous or night sweating.

Scientific research on Anemarrhena for night sweating specifically is lacking. While some studies have investigated its anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and endocrine-modulating effects, these do not directly validate its efficacy for night sweating in a clinical context. Most modern uses for night sweats still rely on TCM principles rather than robust clinical trial evidence. Therefore, its application for this condition is justified primarily by historical and traditional use rather than supported by modern scientific validation.
