Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5
Fat liver oil, more commonly referred to as cod liver oil, is scientifically validated for use in supporting and treating night blindness. Night blindness is often caused by a deficiency in vitamin A, an essential nutrient for the synthesis of rhodopsin, a pigment in the retina necessary for vision in low-light conditions. Cod liver oil is one of the richest natural dietary sources of vitamin A (retinol), providing a highly bioavailable form of this nutrient. Historical and clinical data both demonstrate that vitamin A supplementation can reverse symptoms of night blindness, especially in populations where dietary deficiency is prevalent. Studies dating back to the early 20th century showed that supplementation with cod liver oil could rapidly improve vision in individuals experiencing night blindness due to vitamin A deficiency. This treatment is endorsed by the World Health Organization and is part of public health strategies in regions where vitamin A deficiency is common. While excessive intake of vitamin A can cause toxicity, therapeutic use of cod liver oil in appropriate doses is a well-established, evidence-based intervention for night blindness.
