For the health condition: Night Blindness
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
3,3'-Dihydroxy-β-carotene-4,4'-dione is better known as astaxanthin, a carotenoid pigment found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, and other seafood. Night blindness is most commonly associated with vitamin A deficiency, as vitamin A is essential for the formation of rhodopsin, a photopigment in the retina necessary for vision in low-light conditions. While astaxanthin itself is not a direct source of vitamin A (unlike β-carotene), it is a potent antioxidant that can cross the blood-retina barrier and has demonstrated protective effects on retinal cells in preclinical studies.
Several animal studies and a limited number of small human trials have suggested that astaxanthin supplementation may help protect against retinal damage and improve certain aspects of visual function, including contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. However, direct evidence of its efficacy in treating or preventing night blindness in humans is limited. The rationale for its use is based on its antioxidant properties and capacity to protect photoreceptor cells from oxidative stress, which may indirectly support retinal health and potentially benefit those at risk for night blindness, especially in cases where oxidative damage is a contributing factor.
To date, clinical evidence supporting the use of astaxanthin for night blindness is not as robust as that for vitamin A, but there is a moderate scientific basis for its supportive role in retinal health and visual function. Therefore, while not a first-line treatment, its use is scientifically justified to a moderate degree.
