Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Gelsemium, derived from the plant Gelsemium sempervirens, has a long history of use in traditional and homeopathic medicine, particularly for nervous disorders such as neurosis, anxiety, and related symptoms like trembling and restlessness. Its use for neurosis is primarily rooted in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when it was included in various pharmacopoeias and recommended by practitioners for anxiety-like symptoms, stage fright, and psychosomatic complaints. However, the evidence supporting its efficacy is largely anecdotal or based on case reports and homeopathic provings rather than rigorous scientific trials. Modern clinical studies are sparse, and the few that exist are generally of low methodological quality, often with small sample sizes and potential biases. There is little to no robust, peer-reviewed clinical evidence published in mainstream medical literature to substantiate its effectiveness specifically for neurosis or similar neuropsychiatric conditions. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and historical precedent, scientific support remains minimal.
