For the health condition: Neurosis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gardenia jasminoides, commonly known as Cape Jasmine or Zhizi (栀子) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for various mental and emotional disturbances, including symptoms that would today be classified as neurosis (such as anxiety, irritability, and insomnia). In TCM theory, Gardenia jasminoides fruit is believed to "clear heat" and "calm the mind," and it is often included in formulations targeting restlessness and agitation. However, while this traditional use is well-documented in classic Chinese medical texts, there is limited modern scientific evidence specifically validating its efficacy for neurosis or related psychiatric conditions. A few pharmacological studies suggest that extracts of Gardenia jasminoides may have sedative or anxiolytic effects in animal models, potentially due to compounds such as geniposide, but rigorous clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, the support for its use in neurosis is primarily based on traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation.
