Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has traditionally been used to support and treat neuralgia and neuritis, particularly in the context of peripheral neuropathies. The rationale for its use stems from B6’s essential role in nerve function, neurotransmitter synthesis, and myelin formation. Historically, vitamin B6 supplementation has been advocated in cases of neuritis (inflammation of nerves) and neuralgia (nerve pain), especially when these conditions are associated with a known deficiency of B6 or other B vitamins. Early clinical reports and practice patterns, especially in the mid-20th century, recommended B6 as part of a broader B-vitamin therapy for these conditions.

However, scientific support for B6 supplementation in neuralgia or neuritis in individuals without a documented deficiency is limited. Small studies and case series have suggested some benefit in specific contexts, such as isoniazid-induced neuropathy (a side effect of tuberculosis treatment), where B6 supplementation is standard. There are also reports of symptom improvement in carpal tunnel syndrome and other neuropathies, but the evidence is not robust, and the benefit is mainly observed in those with a relative or absolute deficiency. Excessive vitamin B6 intake can itself cause sensory neuropathy, so indiscriminate use is not recommended.
