Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Poppy, particularly species such as Papaver somniferum (opium poppy), has a long history of traditional use for pain relief, including neuralgia and neuritis. The milky latex from the poppy plant contains alkaloids like morphine and codeine, which are well-known analgesics. In traditional herbal medicine and historical texts, poppy preparations have been used for centuries to alleviate pain associated with nerve inflammation and damage, such as neuralgia (nerve pain) and neuritis (nerve inflammation). However, while the pain-relieving effects of poppy derivatives are established, its use specifically for neuralgia and neuritis in traditional systems is based more on general pain management rather than targeted treatment for these conditions. Modern medical practice recognizes the effectiveness of opiates for severe pain, but due to safety, addiction, and legal concerns, raw or unspecified poppy products are not recommended for these conditions today. There is limited direct scientific research on the efficacy of unspecified poppy preparations for neuralgia or neuritis outside the context of purified and standardized pharmaceutical opioids. As such, while traditional use is well documented, high-quality scientific validation for the use of unspecified poppy in neuralgia and neuritis is lacking, justifying a moderate evidence score of 2.
